Susan Lehman studied fine art and textiles at California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, CA, graduating with distinction in Textile Arts. She started teaching adult art classes and showing her work during her second year at CCAC. Susan taught children’s art across the curriculum at a Visual and Performing Arts Magnet School in Sacramento, CA. Upon retiring to the Southern Oregon Coast she has devoted herself to painting full time.
Susan’s woven and stitched textile layers have given way to collaged papers and she now works primarily in acrylics. Working in the field with watercolor to gather visual information about the rhythms and patterns found in Nature, Susan brings those nuances back into the studio where she works abstractly on paper and canvas. Her acrylic seascapes often retain the feeling of watercolors in that the white of the paper is usually retained; the result is a glorious glow of light. Varied subtleties of gray contrast the starkness of her black/white compositions. Elements of water, forests, rocks and waterfalls appear in the fluidity of her initial floating of paint over a wet canvas. By creating her own collage papers from recycled packing papers and paper towels Susan is able to blend the painted papers with the painted canvas.
Her work can be seen on her website: http://www.susanlehmanartist.com and at Second Street Gallery in Old Town Bandon, at Mindpower Gallery in Reedsport and at the Gold Rush Center in Gold Beach.
