These images are from a body of work that began after a 10 day hospitalization. After being prodded, poked, examined and scanned, this work was the beginning of a powerful act of reclaiming and examining my self.
Using traditional materials of charcoal and oil and canvas, I began an investigation of my ‘self’. The work asks: Can one really see all that there is to constitute a person based on baselines, comparisons and appearances?
I think not.
As a private person, I always have a strongly negative reaction to hospitals. Unfortunately, at times they are a necessary evil. The act of creating self-portraits helps me clarify for myself and others, the depths of the human condition.
