Nona Faustine

Over My Dead Body, 40×30 inches, Digital C-print

Black women are seldom thought of as Feminist.
We are often challenged when we call ourselves that.
We came off the slave ships onto the shores of America as Feminist
Joined by black men on the plantations where we were equal in experiencing
the same levels of brutality and back breaking labor.
Even in bondage we challenged and fought for some level of equality.
Americas earliest Feminist were enslaved Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth
Aren’t I Woman!
To be a black Feminist in America is to be forced out in the cold, often alone, defending one’s existence.
