Several years ago I was on an airplane sitting next to two strangers. As we began talking they shared with me that although they were professionals by day, their true excitement was found after work playing with clay. As we parted ways, one woman leaned into me and said, “find a ceramics class anywhere – and just start.” Many years later her voice kept resonating within me and finally I found a class with a very patient teacher. Little did I know how much I would fall in love with anything having to do with clay.
These pieces are fine porcelain thrown on a wheel, altered and carved. I initially began carving to hide my mistakes and take off weight – and quickly it became my surface of choice. I now make pieces just so I can carve them and ultimately move them into someone else’s hands who will enjoy using them as much as I enjoyed creating them.
